CHOOSING
DIFFERENTIAL LOCKERS.
A differential locker and a limited-slip differential are different ways to manage traction. Start by understanding that difference, then narrow the options to your axle and the driving you do.
Talk to the shop ↗
Know which type you are discussing
- Limited-slip differential
- Reduces differences in wheel speed and transfers more torque toward the wheel with grip. It does not provide the complete lock-up of a locking differential.
- Selectable locker
- Lets the driver choose when to lock the differential. Ask what controls and supporting equipment the selected design needs, and when the manufacturer permits its use.
- Automatic locker
- Locks and unlocks through its mechanical operation rather than a driver-operated switch. Ask how the specific unit behaves during turns and on the road.
What is fitted now?
Bring your vehicle’s year and model, any axle or differential details, and records of previous modifications. If you’re unsure what was fitted by a previous owner, say so before choosing parts.
Which option suits the driving I actually do?
Tell the shop how much time the vehicle spends on paved roads and which trail conditions you want to address. Ask what changes you would notice with the proposed unit and get its operating instructions before heading out. Fitment and road manners matter as much as the feature list.
What does the job include?
Ask about parts, installation, and any operating or maintenance instructions. Mention planned gear changes or other axle work, then confirm the estimate and timing for the full job.
Air locker or electric locker?
Both are selectable designs, but they use different equipment to engage. An air-operated locker needs a suitable air supply and plumbing. An electrically actuated design uses electrical controls; Eaton’s ELocker, for example, uses an electromagnetic mechanism. Ask about axle fitment, supporting parts and operation for the exact unit you’re considering before buying it.
Keep planning.
