BUILD GUIDES / PLANNING GUIDE
BEFORE YOU FIT
BIGGER TIRES.
Thinking about larger tires? Gather these details before discussing gears, so your estimate starts with the vehicle you actually drive.
Talk to the shop ↗
Why tire size changes the conversation.
A larger tire travels farther with each revolution, changing the vehicle’s effective gearing. A different axle ratio can help match the drivetrain to that tire size. The right choice also depends on the transmission, highway engine speed and intended use; there is no single ratio for every Jeep on a given tire size.
Write down both tire sizes.
Record the size fitted now and the size you want. Add your vehicle’s year, make, and model. If you have axle or gear-ratio records, bring them; a photo of a parts list or service invoice can help.
Do 35- or 37-inch tires need different gears?
Tire size alone doesn’t decide it. Start with your current axle ratio, engine, transmission and how you use the vehicle. Tell the shop if it struggles on hills or shifts more often after the tire change. A gear chart can help start the discussion, but another Jeep’s ratio is not a recommendation for yours.
Describe where and how you drive.
Include your usual highway trips, hills, trail days, and the equipment you carry. If the vehicle already feels different after a tire change, note what happens and when. Those observations give us a clearer starting point.
Leave with a clear estimate.
Ask which gear options fit your vehicle, what parts and labor are included, and whether related work should be considered. Before scheduling, ask about timing and any driving or follow-up instructions after installation.
Keep planning.
